Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition – Remastered (2022) 4K UHD review

Yeah, those odd-looking outlines on the Klingon ships in the opening battle scene, for example. Why are those there? This movie has been re-assembled from the original camera negative (rescanned) with re-composited analog (1970s-era) visual effects and re-rendered (2000s-era) computer-generated (CG) visual effects. So, why does the film overall look like it barely escaped the ’70s?

Since my childhood, there has been (and probably always will be) a level of my Trekkieness that appreciates Star Trek: The Motion Picture. In 2010, I wrote a review praising the 2001 Director’s Edition re-edit/gussying-up of ST:TMP. (I do remember writing it… it had been a long weekend away from work. I popped in the original DVD of the Director’s Edition of the movie, and really liked it.)

That was 12 years ago (hard to believe!). In the time since, and especially after I watched the original theatrical version of ST:TMP in a real movie theater in 2019, I’ve come to the conclusion, odd though it may be, that I like the original theatrical version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture better than the Director’s Edition.

And that opinion puts me in the minority. Most anyone who’s written about ST:TMP since 2001 (when the DVD of the director’s cut was released) proclaims the Director’s Edition to be the superior version. However, upon my re-viewings, there’s something about the 1979 theatrical version of the movie that just seems to flow better than its 2001/2022 counterpart. As another critic wrote in 2009, “…the pacing of the Director’s Edition [is] too choppy, and [I] wasn’t much impressed with many of the new visual effects.”

Lost? No worries. Here’s the backstory, in one long paragraph: Star Trek: The Motion Picture (directed by Robert Wise, yep, the same guy who made The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews) was released in 1979. It was a no-expense-spared old-school Hard Science Fiction adventure movie (think more 2001: A Space Odyssey, less Star Wars). It was a box-office success, but received mixed reviews. The Motion Picture was the first official Star Trek live-action production of any kind after the original television series had been canceled in 1969. Even though it was a big-budget “prestige picture” with an A-list director, the movie was produced under some horrible working conditions and extreme duress. As a result, when ST:TMP was released to theaters in December ’79, Wise decided it wasn’t in a completed state. In 2001, the original studio, Paramount Pictures, released a DVD (home video copy) of the movie, containing Wise’s re-edit, with reworked visual effects (taking the original 1970s special visual effects and augmenting them with then-new computer-generated effects), a new sound mix, new dialogue in places, and a few other changes. Wise died in 2005, but in 2021, a group of filmmakers (who’d worked on ST:TMP in 2000-01), with Paramount’s backing, returned to the film and produced a new new version (incorporating Wise’s 2001 revisions with newer computer-generated effects, a newer sound mix, new music score mix, and further changes). That version, dubbed Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition – Remastered, was released via Internet streaming in April 2022, with a forthcoming release to the physical 4K ultra high-definition Blu-ray format in September 2022.

Whoa, that was a slog. But if you’re among the uninitiated, that should bring you current to 2022, more or less!

The “big deal” about this 2022 version of ST:TMP is simply that the studio has re-rendered the 2001 Director’s Edition CG effects, and made other changes, to now be able to stream/broadcast/project the movie in the 4K “ultra high-definition” format, whereas before the movie, with Wise’s changes, was not available in that format.*

The thing is, you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. Even though it was a commercial success in 1979-80, there was a perception among critics and viewers that it wasn’t actually very good. One 1979 review, for example, called Robert Wise’s direction “listless.” The Motion Picture was criticized for being slow, talky, with a half-baked story that riffed on one of the better episodes of the original Star Trek television series.

In truth, as a lifelong fan of (old-school, original-cast) Star Trek, I like ST:TMP. I appreciate it for what it is… it’s not the best of the Trek series of movies, but it’s not the worst.

But, in the marketing surrounding this 2022 release of the movie, it feels like the powers-that-be are really trying to turn it into something it isn’t: which is to say, an action-packed sci-fi genre masterpiece, along the lines of something like The Empire Strikes Back or Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. ST:TMP isn’t any of those movies and never will be.

After reading nearly every interview David C. Fein (the producer of the overall project) has given, it’s apparent, for this new release, there are are a lot of stakeholders, with a lot of goals, most especially: growing the Paramount Plus streaming service (which, to clarify, is not a bad thing in and of itself). The one remark from Fein that caught my eye is this: “[It’s] not a restoration.” (Then what is it?) The phrase “too many cooks spoil the broth” comes to mind.

After watching The Director’s Edition – Remastered twice, I think, on a technical level, it does surpass the 2001 DVD. I say think because, on my 5K computer monitor, which has been color calibrated, the color in a lot of the movie feels… really beige (or actually yellow). Viewing Director’s Edition – Remastered on a big-screen plasma television, the color does feel a bit more… right. But the question is, which is correct, the monitor or the TV? Ultimately, the color grading of the original theatrical version feels the most “correct” to me. And (after watching the 2019 theatrical re-release) I still personally prefer the original 1979 edit of the film to any edit released since.

There is a certain beguiling, 1970s aura and vibe to Star Trek: The Motion Picture. It works without any changes. You don’t need Robert Wise’s 2001 changes, or Fein’s 2021-22 changes, to appreciate the movie. It works fine as originally made. And here is where the producers, including Fein, and the studio (Paramount) really did something good for “the fans”: *you can actually watch the original theatrical version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 4K ultra high-definition. It’s available right now (April 2022) in an almost endless array of streaming and other formats (including physical disc, one of the few 4K discs I actually own). Unlike Disney and Lucasfilm, the owners of the Star Wars franchise [who have never (ever) released the original/unaltered versions of the classic (1977-83) Star Wars movies in high definition, on any format (even anamorphic widescreen)], Paramount has made the original, theatrical 1979 version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture widely available, and for that, they are to be commended.

To go back to the beginning of this write-up: after all these years, and changes made to Star Trek: The Motion Picture, why are there still matte lines around some of the ships/models in outer space? Why doesn’t the movie overall look amazing? Well, I’ll tell you why: the movie was made in 1979, and no amount of 21st-century digital magic can change that. Period. The marketing campaign has been pretty glossy (with fawning reviews from many outlets), but in the end, it’s still a 43-year-old movie.

All that said, I’ll probably spring for the physical disc version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition – Remastered when Paramount releases it in September 2022. First, I want to see if it looks any better on disc than it does on streaming. (In my experience, home physical media usually does look better than streaming, if for no other reason than higher bit rates). But second, Star Trek: The Motion Picture is an outlier: a “big space movie” with almost no violence at all; the sole “Hard Science Fiction” entry in the entirety of the Star Trek movie series. It was Wise’s first and last dalliance with theĀ Trek universe, not to mention (Star Trek creator) Gene Roddenberry’s only real involvement in any Trek movie, and, therefore, it deserves respect.

I’ll continue to watch, and enjoy, the original theatrical version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in its various home media releases (my personal favorite remains the 2009 Blu-ray version; I prefer it even to the 2021 4K UHD disc). I’ll shelve the 2022 Director’s Edition – Remastered alongside some previous versions (the 1980s Special Longer Version; the 2001 Director’s Edition) in my collection to be appreciated, but not cherished.

A deep dive into paid streaming services (updated)

Looking over the apps on my phone, I currently have active subscriptions to these paid video streaming services (listed in no particular order):

Netflix
HBO Max
Paramount Plus
Disney Plus
Discovery Plus
YouTube TV
Apple Music
Apple Arcade

These are just the current ones (some are expiring). In the past, I had an Apple TV Plus subscription, but killed it because I don’t like Apple TV Plus (didn’t like The Morning Show; thought Ted Lasso was overrated). Also subscribed to MLB TV at one point, but let it go (it’s an excellent product, just didn’t watch it enough).

Right now, the one my household uses the most is Netflix, hence its placement at the top of the list. I don’t really foresee a future where I don’t pony up the ~$20/month (+tax) for their 4K subscription. Why is Netflix the #1 streamer for us? It’s content. They have the 2009 Where the Wild Things Are, which is relatively difficult to find. (I don’t particularly like it, but my kids do.) Also, the presence of Breaking Bad and El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie alone are reason enough to put Netflix at the top of the streaming heap. (I’m working on a review of El Camino, hope to finish it soon.)

HBO Max is about to get canceled. I love their shows (getting into Minx), but I’m adverse to how they release episodes of new shows (2 at a time per week?). Also, since I get Discovery Plus through my phone carrier, does that mean a free upgrade to Warner Bros. Discovery now that the 2 services have merged?

I subscribed to Paramount Plus (formerly known as CBS All Access) solely to stream the new 4K ultra-high definition remaster of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition. I’ve seen it now, and that’s that, so Paramount Plus shall be canceled soon. Of all the major U.S. television networks with an “over-the-top” streaming product, Paramount Plus feels the most superfluous. And even on their ad-free plan, there are the pre-roll ads you can’t skip. (Other “ad-free” streamers, like Netflix and HBO Max, have these kinds of ads, but they’re skippable.)

I currently receive Disney Plus for free through my phone carrier. They have all things Star Wars, so it stays. And actually, the content is pretty great (even more obscure titles like the excellent 1999 TV movie version of Annie are on there). No complaints here. Overall, Disney Plus is a distant second to Netflix in terms of content and value-per-dollar.

Discovery Plus is better than it has any right to be. The content is compelling (some excellent documentaries!). Looking forward to seeing what happens now that they own (the former?) HBO Max.

YouTube TV is my meta subscription to replace cable, which I quit in the summer of ’21. I say “meta” because it truly has everything you’d want and nothing you wouldn’t. (The only thing missing is free YouTube Premium, but there are workarounds if you know where to look.) My only quibble with YouTube TV is their clunky interface: it’s based on normal YouTube, so navigation can be frustrating and not intuitive at all. That aside, the unlimited cloud-based DVR (which they pioneered) is amazing–I have more than 100 shows on constant “record”. Sports streaming is pretty great, too–baseball, golf, even the 2022 NCAA tournament, all look amazing.

Apple Music. Yep, I’m not a big fan of Spotify. My phone carrier offers free Apple Music, so there you go. Really enjoying their high-res downloads (just about as good as Tidal’s). Their radio stations are good, too. And no ads, ever.

Apple Arcade. What’s the point of Apple Arcade? You still have to download each and every game separately to your iDevice, and each game acts differently, anyway (different controls, different privacy click-throughs), which kind of defeats the purpose of an all-encompassing gaming subscription. Maybe if it was cloud-based? Anyway, Apple Arcade… ultimately, I don’t use it, so it’s headed to the junk pile of streaming service ex-subscriptions in my household.

Someone asked about Amazon Prime Video. I don’t know, never used it. I refuse to subscribe to Amazon Prime (although I do make occasional purchases on Amazon, I don’t need the free shipping, etc.).

Also got asked about Peacock. I do watch it, but the free version only. No clue how the paid version works.

And as far as some of the more esoteric streamers go… Curia. I tried them out. They did not show movies in the correct aspect ratio, which is a deal breaker for me. (Yeah, I’m picky about that.) Criterion Channel. Nah, I’d just rather own their physical DVDs and Blu-rays. Kanopy… tried it out once, got cut off mid-video (when I exceeded some kind of arbitrary limit placed by one of the local libraries I subscribed through). Never went back. Hulu… is the PG13-rated version of Disney Plus, right? Nah, I’ll just do Disney Plus. Audible Premium/Premium Plus. They’re expensive for what you get (one free audiobook/month?). No. There are plenty of places to listen to audiobooks for free (here’s one I really like). CNN Plus… sources are predicting it doesn’t last a year (as per the podcast episode linked on that page). I myself predicted Quibi wouldn’t last a year, and it didn’t. Apple Podcasts, the paid ones? No thanks, I’ll just continue to listen to free podcasts.

Tubi is my current favorite of the free, no-sign-in-required streaming TV apps (great content!).

Ranking the Star Trek movies (2022 edition)

I first did something like this eleven years ago. My opinions on some of the films, as you’ll see below, have changed. This list include consideration of the 4K UHD remaster of Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition released on April 5, 2022, and the revelation that TMP could have had a different (and much better) ending.

Films are ranked worst-to-best. Light spoilers may follow.

#13 STAR TREK BEYOND (2016)

Yeah. It took 14 years for a film to supplant Star Trek: Nemesis as my pick for “worst Star Trek movie ever made”. The main issue is the movie just feels lazy. Lazy in conception, writing, production… pretty much everything. I disliked Beyond so much, I couldn’t sit through the theatrical screening in 2016. Subsequent attempts at re-watches have not improved its position in my book.

#12 STAR TREK: NEMESIS (2002)

Nemesis feels like a completely generic action movie set in outer space. That “feeling” that dominates most of the previous Trek movies is gone. Plus, the editing is awful. I could’ve used more/better “character moments”, and less action action action.

And: Tom Hardy (even a young Tom Hardy) looks nothing like Patrick Stewart.

#11 STAR TREK: GENERATIONS (1994)

It’s better than Star Trek: Nemesis, but it’s still not a good Trek movie by any measure. When I think about why, the old adage “too many cooks spoil the broth” comes to mind. There were just too many creatives and suits involved in the gestation and production of Star Trek: Generations, who wanted too many things out of it. Generations couldn’t deliver on expectations, and there you are.

#10 STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK (1984)

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that Leonard Nimoy was not a great director. Sure, he could get his actors in front of the camera and shoot good scenes. And his chemistry with the original Trek cast is undeniable. But as a crafter of motion picture, mise en scene even, whose arguable career highlight was Three Men and a Baby, Nimoy was less auteur and more… workman. And there’s really nothing wrong with that, per se. Like Coke Zero, it is what it is. Would I have hired Nimoy to direct a Trek movie? No, but then again, I’m not a studio executive.

But there’s a counter-argument to made here: in Trek III and its sequel, the cast is truly having a good time, with loads of chemistry in front of and behind the camera, and you can’t fake that. Nimoy enjoyed directing; the cast genuinely responded to his filmmaking. So, I guess I’ll give him a pass.

Moving on… in my mind, Trek III is a nice collection of action/adventure setpieces. There’s a lot of nice interplay between the various castmembers. Christopher Lloyd is a nice but nasty Klingon villain. But when I think back, the first thing I remember about III is the incredible poster art. The second is the “Mr. Adventure” scene featuring Uhura (Nichelle Nichols).

So I guess in my mind, III is the most disposable of the original-cast Trek movies, and there you go. Except, I will admit: it was my favorite Trek movie when I was a kid.

#9 STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER (1989)

To put Final Frontier in at number nine on this list is not a slight, nor is it an oversight. I genuinely believe William Shatner’s sole directorial/story effort in the Star Trek movie series is not as bad as legend has it. The movie is entertaining; the action and adventure scenes are done quite well; the drama is well-done, with great acting from Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley. But there’s another thing that elevates Trek V in my book: to me, it feels more like an episode of the original series than any other movie of the first six.

#8 STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT (1996)

Star Trek: First Contact is a great movie for what it is: The Next Generation cast’s attempt to go “big” and dark with lots of action and drama. It works. But I might be the only Trekkie this side of Risa who thinks Insurrection is better. Yep. Call me crazy. To me, some elements of First Contact haven’t aged well (the opening scenes in particular), and when I want to spend some “good cinematic time” with the TNG crew, I just find I like Insurrection more.

#7 STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE (1979)

Ugh. This one. TMP is a good movie in concept, but the execution kind of killed it. To be honest, I used to be a BIG fan, but… sigh… the story does not connect for me now (especially after viewing the remastered Director’s Edition).

Concept- and story-wise, you could cut the irony with a Klingon bat’leth! The movie whose tagline was the human adventure is just beginning has no human story to tell at all. Maybe if they’d used this music in the final scenes, it would have worked better. Maybe.

I will add that I appreciate TMP on a lot of levels, especially in its quest to be the only Star Trek movie going for “hard science fiction” with Big Ideas and the like. I can also appreciate that TMP was the closest Gene Roddenberry ever got to total control on a Trek movie production. But where’s the heart?

#6 STAR TREK (2009)

It’s a good movie. Great acting, amazing special effects. Arguably the first and only “hard” science fiction Trek movie since The Motion Picture. The story doesn’t make a lick of sense, but the pictures are so pretty we forget that pretty quickly. And Nimoy’s great here as Spock. He really makes the movie.

#5 STAR TREK: INSURRECTION (1998)

Sometimes you just need good, simple entertainment: entertainment that doesn’t work you too hard. Something you can pop into the disc player, or load up on the hard drive, or cue up on the streaming service-du-jour, and just go with it. Star Trek: Insurrection works on that level. It moves along at a brisk pace, has some good character moments, great special effects (the best in the entire Trek franchise until J.J. happened along a decade later), and… whoa, is that F. Murray f’ing Abraham as a villain? Yes, it is. Add to that the music score, among Jerry Goldsmith’s absolute best; great acting; surefooted directing from Jonathan Frakes; a story with real consequence. It took three tries, but with Insurrection the TNG team finally got cinematic Trek right.

#4 STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS (2013)

I get it. I’m totally in the minority here. Thing is, I love Into Darkness. For me, the movie works on so many levels. I loved it the first time I saw it (theatrically, in IMAX). Producer/director J.J. Abrams injects some much-needed pathos into the Trek franchise, and I’m grateful. Into Darkness is serious cinema; I hold it up as the best any modern Star Trek movie could aspire to be.

 

#3 STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991)

It’s no coincidence: the three best Star Trek movies are the ones that involved writer/editor/director Nicholas Meyer to one extent or another. Trek VI is the lesser of his efforts, but it’s still a good movie. All else notwithstanding, Trek VI holds a special place in my heart because my father took me to see it in a movie theater when I was 13. As far as I can remember, it was the only movie we ever saw together in a movie theater. Ever. I loved my dad (he passed away in 2019), and Star Trek was one of the only things we ever really bonded over. Weep, weep.

#2 STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME (1986)

The Voyage Home is the only Trek movie that works as outright comedy. I genuinely laugh out loud when I watch it. For a jaded, cynical Trekkie, that’s something. There’s also genuine atmosphere in The Voyage Home, much like of that in The Motion Picture, which makes the movie stand out in my memory.

#1 STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN (1982)

Wrath of Khan is the Goldfinger of the Trek movie series: the entry almost everyone calls “the best”. Fine, I’ll go with that. It has heart, which is something TMP sorely lacked. And I’ll be the first to say there’s no way those pecs are real (Ricardo Montalban’s). But… yeah.
